Got Agua? Responds to President’s Call to Action.
Currently 1.1 billion people lack access to safe drinking water and 2.8 billion people lack access to basic sanitation. Half of the world’s hospitalizations are due to people drinking contaminated water and – each year - almost 3.6 million people die due to water-related illness.
This global tragedy is only compounded by the fact that most of the victims year after year will be children under the age of 5.
The stark math is difficult to ignore: almost 6,000 children die every day from disease associated with lack of access to safe drinking water, inadequate sanitation and poor hygiene — the equivalent of 20 Boeing 747s or Airbus A380s crashing every day.
The time to act is now. Dirty water kills. An estimated 135 million people will die before 2020 because they lack safe drinking water and sanitation.
